BBQ Pit Maintenance

Look after your pit with proper BBQ Pit Maintenance

The most commonly over-looked subject that new BBQ pit owners face is the setup and maintenance.

Without proper care, a BBQ pit's performance can be severely affected, resulting in early wear and tear, broken parts, poor quality food results and unstable internal temperatures.

Worse yet, it could lead to a very expensive repair bill that could mean replacement of the BBQ pit itself.

It is recommended that all owners of BBQ pits take the time to educate themselves a little with a few simple tips and tricks that will help to significantly increase the working life-span of their BBQ pits and smokers. It is time well invested and does not cost a single penny.

Curing a BBQ pit

Before using a BBQ pit for the first time, pit curing is part of the "setup" process that all new owners should implement prior to cooking with the pit for the first time. PAM offers a specially formulated spray that is designed for use with BBQ pits and it is both efficient and easy to use. Conventional bottled cooking and olive oil work just as well.

The easiest method to apply a coating to a BBQ pit is to use a cup or empty tin can and a clean paint brush, and apply the oil evenly over the interior and the exterior of all areas of the pit that get warm.

It is recommended that after the first application, a low heat is applied inside the BBQ pit, to "cure" the oil. Repeat this process again a second time for the best results, and avoid cooking without curing your BBQ pit as this will invariably lead to damage that can be very easily avoided.

BBQ pit maintenance

Most BBQ pits are painted using several coats of a specialist high-temperature BBQ paint capable of withstanding 1000 degrees or more.  Despite this, it is not uncommon for BBQ pits to eventually start flaking a little in certain places, and this is considered to be quite normal.

Keeping your BBQ pit out of inclement weather, preferably covered in a dry location is highly preferable, and it is surprising to see how much longer protected pits seem to last compared to those that are left uncovered.

Always use a cover on your BBQ pit as part of your BBQ pit maintenance. For a relatively small investment, you could be prolonging the life of your grill or smoker by several years.

Grill covers can be bought almost anywhere that sells BBQ pits and accessories.  Always clean your pit out after using.  Get rid of old ash and wood that can causes premature rusting and possibly burn-out.

If you notice rusting on the exterior, use a wire brush to remove the rust.  Then use a can of BBQ spray paint and touch it up.  BBQ spray paint can be purchased anywhere that sells BBQ pits and accessories.

A few final words on BBQ pit maintenance

Correct BBQ pit maintenance will extend the life of your BBQ pit and give better results time and time again. Learn it, and practice it. It will save you money in the short and long term.
