Product Description

With its electronic precision, detailed menu, and intelligent system of signals, this Maverick thermometer/timer leaves other kitchen temperature takers in the dust. Designed for remote use with ovens, barbecues, fryers, and smokers, the unit comes with a stainless-steel probe on a detachable 42-inch heat-resistant wire. Its cooking menu includes four doneness levels and 15 different types of meat, ranging from beef and veal to ground turkey. You can pre-program the settings or customize their options, for perfect results with your favorite recipes. The unit’s large LCD monitor is easy to read and shows alert and current temperatures, doneness level, meat category, and cooking time. Using three distinct auditory signals, the device can be set to send signals when food is nearly done, done, or overdone. Other handy features include a 20-hour up/down timer, memory recall, quick start/quick stop timer button, and a simple Celsius/Fahrenheit switch. The unit can be made to stand up, hang, or attach by magnets and runs on a single AAA battery, which is included. --Emily Bedard

Surprisingly good and reliable thermometer

I was a little worried about getting this because it looked too nice (like a PDA), was inexpensive, and had no reviews to back it up.

But the thermometer itself has worked great, is very accurate and quick to come to the right temperature (as good as my instant). I have regularly used it for the oven, in the grill, and on the rangetop w/o any problems.

The extra features on this unit are great as well. All the saved temperature settings for various types of meat are correct, and the pre-alert lets you take it out to rest before reaching the final temperature. There is also an extra setting which I used to program in the temperature for fish.

All in all, I highly recommend this unit, especially for the price.
Top Notch Thermometer

All you could want in a probe thermometer. The probe responds almost instantly to temperature change and is more accurate than any of the other probe thermometers I've tried. Timer includes seconds, which pricier pyrex and polder models do not. Timer can count down or count up as you are cooking, and will continue counting after you remove food from the oven to rest. I've also used it many times in the grill with no problem.
Great!

I love this thermometer. Almost instantly comes up to temperature when probing something. Very easy to operate and even lets you custom enter in a temperature. I've only used in the oven and it has never failed, I've used other thermometers with no good luck. This one always "reads" the meat perfectly. I wouldn't consider using it on a gas grill, it didn't say anywhere in the instructions that you could and I assume it would be way to hot for the thermometer. For the oven it's excellent and you won't be disappointed.
A Must Have Item for Roasting, Braising, and Broiling

We've had our Williams Sonoma branded thermometer for three years now and we love it. Of course, we've not experienced a failure of the probe as have other reviewers. Despite having it in turkey breast just last Thanksgiving with the oven temperature at 475 degrees for half an hour, it still works fine. We've also not used it on a grill; we believe that that is an inappropriate use for it despite manufacturer claims.

We agree that the OEM presets for different meats are too high, however, one can reprogram these to suit personal tastes. This takes some doing to figure out, but is worth it.

Here's a tip, though it will be obvious to experienced roasters and broilers, insert the tip of the probe into the middle of the thickest part of the meat for the most accurate reading. This may mean that several inches of the probe are not in a small roast, but we reason that the center of the roast provides better information on doneness than the surface. In addition, keep it away from any bones.

We would buy this thermometer again. We rate it five stars.
Excellent Oven Thermometer

This is a great oven thermometer! It's very convenient to do other things until the beep, without having to pay attention to the oven. I've set the custom to 145 for fish, and it delivers perfect Salmon every time.
By the way I also prefer using this for boiling water, set to beep at 200, rather than the annoying (to me) whistle from a teapot.

I don't understand why so many people have used it on a barbequeue grill since it's very easy to get air temperatures over 500... way too much for the probe. I'm not sure how you can protect the wire from direct flames, and they're way above 500 degrees!
Additional probes are available.

You have to treat this probe carefully, as you do with any digital probe. The internal wires are fine and will break if flexed repeatedly, especially at the probe to cable transition point. With reasonable care we got 4 years of use from one probe.

After probe died it took some searching to find the probes. They available from Maverick in New Jersey. Two probes for $20, including shipping. Go to http://www.maverickhousewares.com/parts_and_service.htm and down to the PDF form. You want the ET-8 STD PROBE(2-Pak), for $20 as of 12/2008. You will get 2 probes sent by mail. They included shipping and handling in the price. They respond courteously to email.
Maverick Electronic Thermometer is great.

I've owned this Maverick Electronic Thermometer for years, and I purchased one for a Christmas 2009 gift. Mine has been flawless. I wish they were widely available, which they aren't. Luckily I found one via Amazon. This thermometer is not overly complicated, which is good. Select your meat (beef, pork, chicken, turkey, etc, or pick the same but ground vs. whole), then pick how you want it cooked (rare, med-rare, med, well), and away you go. You have the option of selecting the "Warning" option, which beeps at you at 5 degrees below your chosen temp, and I find this very helpful because meat continues to cook for a couple more degrees after you remove it from the heat. This thermometer also has a timer. The greatest thing about this type of meat thermometer is that you insert the temp probe into the meat and you LEAVE it until it is cooked. Continually inserting and removing instant read thermometers only pokes holes in your meat to let the juices run out. I've seen other thermometers similar to this, and none are as intuitive and easy to use.
