Coming this Saturday June 12, 2010 from 10 am to 6 pm is theat the Orange County BBQ festival that is held annually at the Orange County Fairgrounds, FL.

The BBQ festival has grown considerably, and this year there will be over 60 teams present including, NQ BBQ, Baby Roos, Left Coast, Kingpinz, Big Bad BBQ, the Smokin' Yankees and many more.

The single day event has a great deal to offer, including a "Mr BBQ Pageant", where a diverse selection of colourful "Mr BBQ'ers" will be voted for by the attending public in an attempt to win the coveted title.

The Mr. BBQ lineup includes the likes of Ben V. “Lance Smellstrong”, Brian Z "The Lint Trap", Stuart R. "Floozy Kazoo", Darrin P. “Chuckle Cheeks” and many others, all of whom will be doing their best to win your vote on the day.

In addition to the California BBQ Association & Kansas City BBQ Society State Championship Competition, there will also be a Rib Eating Contest (admission tickets can be bought on the door or on the phone), as well as a raffle, car show and a Kids Zone to keep the younger ones happy.

The day looks like a great deal of fun!

Smoke on the Water came about early spring of 2007, when a group of long time buddies decided that the Thomaston-Upson community needed something to get involved in. Three months later, they were planning what would be the largest BBQ event that Thomaston had ever seen.

With the help of the Florida Bar-B-Que Association, the gracious sponsors within the community and the support from friends and family, the 2008 Smoke on the Water became, what they hope will be, an annual fundraiser for the Local Volunteer Fire Departments and the Harbor House which temporarily houses children who have been removed from their home.

2010 marks the 3rd annual 3rd Annual Smoke on the Water BBQ and Bluegrass Festival, which is both a Jack Daniel's and American Royal qualifier, and is taking place on April 2nd and 3rd.

There will be $10,000 in cash prizes at the event, with the Professional Division awards broken down as follows;

Things Teams Need To Know

Setup time begins Thursday April 1st at 12pm and teams must exit by Sunday April 4th at 9am.

Meat inspection takes place Friday noon to 5pm

Cooks meeting Friday at 5pm (Mandatory)

Water and electricty will be provided to the first 40 pro teams, (20 amp service is available on a first-come first-served basis), all teams planning on vending should take advantage of early bird registration.

20' x 40' spaces are available (one space per team)

R.V. Parking is available, however there are no hookups available.

Pets are allowed on site if kept on a 6ft leash, this is strictly enforced.

Quiet time starts at 11pm Friday night and ends 6am Saturday morning.

Ice is available for purchase.

No beverage sales are allowed by cooking teams.

Each team will be provided with 4 wristbands.

Confirmation packets will be mailed by March 20th.

There will be a Southern Fried Catfish dinner with all the fixings for all cooks and sponsors on Thursday night starting at 6pm.

John Boy and Billy's Grillin Sauce BBQ sauce and stew competition takes place on Friday night, the entry fee is $10 per entry.

The first stop on the KCBS sanctioned competition, the American Bass Anglers Barbeque Cook-Off Tor, takes place next week on March 13, 2010, at Lake Lanier, in Laurel Park in Gainesville, GA.

The BBQ competition offers categories for both professional and backyard teams who will be competing for the $5000 prize money at the event. Professional entrants will be competing for larger sums of money as well as an entry free for any KCBS event.

This undeniably popular event on the KCBS Great American BBQ Tour is squarely aimed towards the amateur enthusiast. The ABA runs bass fishing tournaments on all of the major lakes over the eastern US. and 5 sites have been selected for 2010 to host The Great American Barbeque Cook-Off Tour.

Visitors should note that spaces will fill up fast and team entries will be limited, and teams will be accepted on a first come, first serve basis.

During the two day cook-off, there will be other competitions running which include the Sweet Tea Challenge, Wings over Georgia and Battle of the Bands.

The Sweet Tea Challenge

Ya’ll Magazine’s “Sweet Tea Challenge” is a competition that is held in conjunction with the ABA BBQ Cook‐Off, which was devised to find the best southern sweet tea.

The non‐commercial/individual categories are (1) Sweet Tea, (2) Yankee/Unsweet Tea, and (3) Most Unusual Tea.

Commercial categories are (1) Yankee/Unsweet Tea, and (2) Most Unusual Tea, (3) Sweet Tea, which competes for the People’s Choice Award.

Wings over Georgia Competition

The “Wings Over Georgia” competition will be held on Friday, March 12 at Laurel Park in conjunction with the ABA BBQ Cook‐off, to be held on Saturday, March 13th, the spoils of which will be enjoyed and judged by both the cook teams and the anglers.

Entry for the non-commercial category is $15 while the commercial entry fee is $30, and there will be one overall winner from each division who will be named and win a 100% payout from all entries received in that category.

Battle of the Bands

In addition to the cooking competitions, there will also be a competition for musicians, called “Battle of the Bands”, where the bands will have the opportunity to showcase their music and compete for the $1000 Grand Prize, as voted by festival attendees throughout the day in this winner-takes-all contest.

Taking place on the 5th and 6th of March is the Smokin’ in the Square BBQ Cookoff which is sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbeque Society (KCBS) and is designated as a State Championship.  Smokin' in the Square will be the venue where many local barbeque cooks will have the opportunity to compete for $9500 in prize money as well as bragging rights in the popular "Backyard" competition.

Professional and Backyard Cook Teams will begin checking in to the contest in Seville Square on Friday 5th at 7:00am.

The public is invited to share in the fun and to visit with the cook teams to check out the variety of techniques and equipment that are being used in the competition, while families will be able to enjoy the entertainment provided (see schedule below) by a variety of local talent.

In addition to the barbeque competition and the music, there will also be plenty of entertainment for the kids too. Smokin' in the Square will have vendors on site to satisfy your appetite for BBQ, as well as arts and crafts being available over the two day event.

The contest's proceeds will be donated to local charities.

The Florida Barbeque Association sanctioned event, The Pig on the Pond Competition and Festival orgins dates back to 1998, when the event was held on West Avenue in Clermont.

This first event which was created by the South Lake County Community Foundation, brought in around a thousand visitors for what was to be a entertainment-filled day. The following year, the event was relocated to the Waterfront Park for a day and a half, where more activities were added.

It was decided that in order to improve the popularity of the event, that a  separate organization, now known as Pig on the Pond, Inc. was introduced in 2003 with its own board of directors and staff while maintaining a link with the Community Foundation of South Lake County through a supporting organization arrangement.

Attendance to the event has grown year on year, and has averaged out at 20,000 visitors with over $400,000 being raised for scholarships and education opportunities for the South Lake community since 2003.

There will be a daily entry fee  of $2 per person which will be collected at the gates where all paying visitors will receive a hand stamp allowing re-entry on that day only.

There will be plenty of entertainment in the carnival, and carnival armbands will be on sale for $15, which can be used from 1pm until 7pm, with armband sales being closed at 6pm. The armbands provide unlimited use of the rides on Saturday only.

"BBQ Alley" will please BBQ food fans, as they will be able to sample cook team competitors award winning recipes on SATURDAY only. To take part and try the wide range of delicious BBQ on offer, visitors will need to purchase “Pig Bucks” at the two stations in the cook team area. It should be noted that the Cook Teams who are vending will only accept “Pig Bucks”.

There will be several notable rub and sauce producers, who's products will be available to use in the class, and will prove to be a great opportunity for participants to evaluate and use some of the best competition quality products available.

37 Pro Division Teams, 45 Backyard Teams fought it out at the Florida Barbeque Association sanctioned BBQ event, Ribs on the Ridge, in Haines City Florida which drew crowds from all over the state in what turned out to be a great two-day event full of competetive spirit.

Ribs on the Ridge saw 87  competitors who were a mixture of both amateur and professional level cooks taking part in the second annual event`that drew over ten thousand visitors to the waters-edge of Lake Eva on what was a very pleasant, warm day.

Tommy Castle, the city's parks and recreation facility manager and organizer of the event, said, "I think the event has gone very well with the community, we try to bring different things to meet everybody's needs. In two years we've doubled competitors and attendance from the community."

To benefit the St. Mark School Sheepshead Bay, the NEBS sanctioned BBQ contest Grillin' on the Bay, will be held on the corner of East 18th Street and Avenue Z, Sheepshead Bay Brooklyn on Saturday March 27, 2010.

Grillin' on the Bay will be featuring four cooking categories, which are, Chicken, Fish, Pork Ribs and the Chef's Choice.

The cost is $75 to $125 to to enter the competition and have a chance at winning both cash and prizes.

Brooklyn Chili Smackdown

In addition to the Grillin' on the Bay BBQ competition, the event will also hold the  The Brooklyn Chili Smack Down, which is a People's Choice Chili Contest where this free to enter competition allows cooks to make any type of Chili with a chance of winning a $100 cash prize.

For non-competitors visiting Grillin' on the Bay, bowls of Chili will be available for $10, which you will be able to refill to your hearts content until satisfied. Food will be available from mid-day, with the Chili tasting beginning at 1pm.

The event, sponsored by RUB BBQ, will provide BBQ and beer as well as plenty of other non-alcoholic beverages and food stuffs.

This year there are some changes to the rules and categories, so entrants are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the NEBS rules as they are very different from the KCBS rules which some may be accustomed to.

The HAVA BBQ London Bridge Style in Lake Havasu City, AZ., is home of the State Championship. Nationally ranked & World Championship BBQ Teams are competing in (4) main categories, chicken, ribs, pulled pork and brisket.

The food categories include “Anything Butt” and “Desserts”, in addition to which, the old favorite "Havasu Salsa Challenge" is making a comeback at this years event.

The HAVA BBQ London Bridge Style event is sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbeque Society (KCBS) and is a qualifier for the Jack Daniels (Lynchburg, TN) and American Royal Invitational (Kansas City, MO) Competitions with a prize money pot of $9300 dollars.

HAVA BBQ has also notably teamed up with AZ Barbeque Society and will be one of the events within the state where teams will compete for Arizona State Team Champion.

This years number of teams attending HAVA BBQ has grown, with around 75 attending, including Notley Que, Notley Que,  T&J's Backyard BBQ,  I.A.B. 30 BBQ,  Tropical Heat BBQ,  Smitty's Smoke Patrol,  Brazen BBQ, Catalina BBQ Company, and BLQUE among many others.

The contest is currently underway with pits and crews cooking their hearts out, the results of which will follow shortly.

Yesterday, the Houston Rodeo World Championship Contest BBQ kicked off in style, with more than 350 teams of professional and backyard BBQ chefs firing up their smokers and grills in preparation for the World's largest BBQ competition.

The competitors are cooking in various categories including spare ribs, chicken, and brisket, with eyes that are firmly set on the prize money, bragging rights and the opportunity to become the World Grand BBQ Champion.

There is no doubt that the BBQ contest is growing in popularity as the last few years attendance to the event rose to  217,640 people in 2009, and 2010 looks to be just as popular.

The HLSR is reknowned for it's Downtown Rodeo Parade as well as the spectacular Rodeo Uncorked! The event has left no stone unturned in the way of entertainment this year, with an International Wine Competition, Rodeo, music, livestock show, and BBQ food providing top quality entertainment for the entire family.

As the results of the BBQ competition start to feed through, they will be announced here shortly afterwards, and in the meantime, there are plenty of places you should visit at the Houston Livestock and Rodeo Show.

The Hideout

During the World's Championship Bar-B-Que Contest, visit The Hideout, located on the northeast corner of the World's Championship Bar-B-Que Contest (east end of Chuckwagon Way). With a full bar, outdoor patio area, DJ music and room for dancing, it's a must-stop for World’s Championship Bar-B-Que Contest visitors. Must be 21 years or older to enter. Free admission to the public once you are on the Contest grounds — no tent pass needed.

Available: Thursday, Feb. 25 and Friday, Feb. 26 — 6 to 11 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 27 — 2 to 11 p.m.

The Garden

The Garden, located in the center of the World's Championship Bar-B-Que Contest, provides live music with room for dancing. Live entertainment will be provided all three days of the contest for a fun family event

The first stop on the Kansas City Barbeque Society Great American BBQ Tour has been announced and the Newport Pig Cookin' Contest is the first of over two dozen stops throughout the country where cooks state-wide will be competing for cash prizes.

Jim Bristle, President of Newport Pig Cookin’ said, “KCBS is the leading barbecue organization in the world, and for them to choose Newport Pig Cookin’ really puts us on the barbecue world map.”

KCBS recently announced the schedule for the 2010 KCBS Great American BBQ Tour.

During the many stops on this country-wide BBQ event, Mike and Chris Peters will be doing presentations where they will be sharing their knowledge and love of their food, as well as providing grilling advice and food samples for attendees.

The presentations will also include a feature where two of the audience will be picked to take part in a Grill Master cook-off, where they will be cooking chicken with a selection of the events sponsors seasonings; including KC Masterpiece or Weber Seasonings and Kingsford Charcoal.

Using the official cooker of the tour, Good-One Smokers/Grills, as well as the tour’s official grilling accessory, GrillGrates, the participants are judged by the audience on the KCBS standards of appearance, taste and texture.

Available over the two day event, there will be concession stands, rides for adults and children, arts and crafts, bake sales, funnel cakes, souvenirs as well as a great deal of music to enjoy.

Admission to the Newport Pig Cookin' Contest is free, and plates of barbecue run at $6 a head with serving starting from 11am, and bulk pork, when available, will be sold at a price of $6 per pound, though stocks may be outstripped by demand from attendees.

2010 marks the 32nd annual Newport Pig Cookin' Contest and is scheduled to take place on April 9-10 at the Newport Community Park where over 80 BBQ'ers will be cooking up the best whole pig and competing for cash prizes.

The first-ever Surfside BBQ and Blues Festival took place yesterday, Saturday 20th, at Surfside Drive where over a dozen BBQ teams took their meat off the pits at 9 a.m. in the morning following Friday nights celebrations as a result of the highly contested soup competition.

The Captain Morgan team took the first place trophy and prize of $250 who's winning entry was a clam chowder.

“Sherry, nutmeg and mace were the secret ingredients. Other than that it was a pretty basic recipe with clam base, cream, half & half. I loaded it with whole baby clams instead of minced clams, and when I made the roux I added a little arrowroot. I used this (he held up a barbecue brush) to drizzle sherry on top and garnished it with bacon bits and parsley.”

Alan McNeill took second place with his "Swamp Soup", along with a trophy and $100 winnings. He claimed that it is a special version of an Italian Wedding Soup, where the meatballs are replaced with shrimp and the spinach with collards.

The third place trophy was awarded to the Kilted Kirby team for their much-liked Kilby Chilli.

Following Friday's soup competition, the meat of the action took place on Saturday, where all the teams who were entered the day prior, took part to compete for $2,000 in prize money.

Trophies and hotel stays were also awarded at the first Surfside Beach Barbecue and Blues Festival, which is hopefully going to make a return next year.

Thirteen teams started cooking barbecue on Friday night, and at 10 a.m. on Saturdaym, the meats were served to a small army of culinary arts students from Horry-Georgetown Technical College.

Reactions of competitors to having students judge their cooking instead of certified barbecue judges was "mostly favorable", said event organizer Rusty Jones of the Omar Shrine Club.

The BBQ was a success with the public, and the reaction from visitors was that they are looking forward to next years Surfside Beach Barbecue and Blues Festival which will hopefully become a yearly event.

This weekend 20th-21st February, in affiliation with the Florida Barbeque Association, the Haines City Parks & Recreation Department is sponsoring Ribs on the Ridge, in Haines City Florday which will draw barbeque teams from across Florida and other states.

2010 marks the second year of this event, which has proved to be very popular with Floridians and fans of BBQ in the locality.

Professional and amateur teams will compete for cash prizes, trophies and “bragging rights.” which will provide a great introduction for the local residents to the art of outdoor BBQ cooking.

In addition to the professional and amateur barbeque divisions, other competitions planned are a
Kid’s-Q division, a sauce contest as well as a dessert contest. Scheduled activities include live outdoor entertainment featuring local bands will round out the festivities.

Haines City are proud to mention the second year of the Ribs on the Ridge event, and rightly so. It is anticipated that a very large crowd will attend the event this year following the popularity of last years event.

Ribs on the Ridge is open to allcomers who may attend and compete if they wish.

The Humble Rodeo encompasses a TGCBCA-sanctioned BBQ Cook-Off held on an adjacent 10-acre concrete parking lot the weekend prior to the Rodeo.

From its inception in 2003, the number of teams participating in the event has grown to a considerable 65 in just two years, meaning that Humble Grand Champions since 2005 have been qualified to enter the American Royal Invitational in Kansas City.

In addition to this, the qualifying teams are entered into a lottery to attend one of the toughest BBQ events, the Jack Daniels Invitational in Lynchburg, Tennessee.

Last years Humble Rodeo BBQ cookoff raised over $100,000 was raised which was donated to the Humble Education Foundation in order to finance innovative classroom projects, teacher and staff development programs and grants to enrich curriculum and I.T. within the Humble Independent School District.

This year was equally successful, with a large number of teams raising money for their cause.

On the 6th, there was a special cookoff dedicated to children who are encouraged to to engage in the fine art of barbecue. Each child who enters is allowed access to a junior-sized pit, plus all the neccessary equipment, such as charcoal, seasonings, and a piece of meat.

They are required to cook the meat right on site and turn in for judging. All of the participants in the Kids Cookoff are declared winners, with several of them being picked out by the judges for having the best tasting food.

The Kids Cookoff was a popular and enjoyable part of the Humble cookoff, and no doubt will spawn a whole new generation of great BBQ'ers in Texas.

The prize for the Grand Champion of the BBQ Cook-Off was donated by Pitmaker's, which is their' newest BBQ smoker called the "Sniper". The substantial smoker has a 24” x 48” main cooking chamber and three heavy-duty slide-out cooking grates and the winner will no doubt be elated at winning such a great pit to cook on.

Just as the rodeo competitors hone their riding skills and shine their buckles, several hundred others are polishing their culinary tools and preparing to heat up their own winning run at glory!

The World's Championship Bar-B-Que Contest is three days of cooking, competition, eating and dancing. The sweet aroma drifts over the Houston metropolis, drawing crowds like bees to honey as a record 217,640 guests joined the feast in 2009.

While the camaraderie is fun and festive, the judging is all business as teams vie for the coveted title of World’s Championship Bar-B-Que Contest Grand Champion. Trophies are awarded to teams preparing the best dish in each category (brisket, chicken and spare ribs) as well as an overall winner.

Awards also are presented to the most colorful team, the team with the cleanest area, the most unique pit and the team with the best skit. Go Texan teams are honored for best barbecue and most colorful team. Recycling awards also are presented.

BBQ Pitmasters come from all over the country to Q, slice and serve up some of the best sausage, brisket and ribs that you have ever tasted.

2010 marks another year for the Kansas Winter Q, with it's 3rd annual event starting in a few shorts days on Friday the 12th of February.

The two-day event is a story of fire and ice as the Barton County Fair Board and its Barbecue Committee invites cookers from across the nation to brave the harsh central Kansas winter for an exciting two-day event at Great Bend, KS.

Due to the cookoff's remarkable popularity in it's first year in 2008, contestants,judges, table captains and other volunteers were cramped into Expo I building, competing for the event prizes.

In 2009, the event exceeded capacity expectations and spilled over into the adjacent Kansas Army National Guard Armory, where for a fee that benefited the BCFA, the participants used barbecued meat to sample and vote for sauces made by the competitors.

Last year, Romine mentioned that there will be an "auctioning of the cooks" during which the public can bid on baskets of barbecue prepared by the cookers and that the winning bidders would be able to pick up their prizes the day after the contest.

The American Bass Anglers Barbeque association have just announced their Cook-Off Tour that will be held in conjunction with Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Weekend Series tournaments at 5 locations in the southern US in 2010.

These events are designed to attract community involvement by encouraging both professional and backyard BBQ enthusiasts to try out their cooking skills at the scheduled locations for fame and prizes.

Jennifer Miller, Sales Manager of the Lake Lanier Convention & Visitors Bureau said, “We are so excited to kick off the ABA series at Lake Lanier. Our facilities at Laurel Park not only provide a brand new mega ramp for launching the fishing tournament but also enough space to host the cook-off, a battle of the bands and so much more.

While the anglers are fishing, local barbeque pros and enthusiasts will be fighting to become the Grand Champion of this popular event. Pro chefs can win as much as $3,000 in cash, while the top backyard griller can win as much as $1,000.

Also, the Grand Champion Prize of $500 gains the winner an entry fee into the Winners Choice KCBS BBQ Cook-Off event which itself has a $250 value.

KCBS Sanctioning has been applied for and the ABA will be using KCBS Rules and Judging Procedures

This was a truly great year for the Lakeland Pig Festival.

Participants competed against each other in two categories, with amateurs in the backyard category (local teams, competing for bragging rights, ribbons and trophies), and more experienced entrants in a "professional group" who vie for a $10,000 prize.

The backyard contest also follows KCBS rules and regulations, and a KCBS representative announced that the Publix Backyard Competition has grown to be the largest of any backyard competition held anywhere.

Among the participants were three teams featured on TLC's BBQ Pitmasters that aired it's final episode a few days ago which gained interest from those following the series on TV, and no doubt contributed towards drawing large attendance numbers to this undeniably popular event.

Last year, the Lakeland Pig Festival drew a crowd of around 30,000 over the two day period that it was held on, and saw just as many attend this year though exact numbers have yet to be confirmed.

It is a little known fact that most of the judges travel great distances to participate in the Lakeland Pig Festival and judging for every pro contest has been 100% by KCBS trained and certified judges so far.

The KCBS is “the largest international organization of barbecue enthusiasts” and has sanctioned the Lakeland Pig Festival since its first contest in 1997. Professional teams travel from all over the U.S. to compete in four categories: Ribs, Chicken, Pork and Brisket who come in great numbers to enjoy the atmosphere and the Florida sunshine.

Over 200 teams from 17 states have competed in Lakeland since the Pig Festival's inception, and many of these well known teams return year after year whom have helped contribute over $100,000 to charitable organizations within Polk County since 1997.

The Mid Atlantic BBQ Association is open to all citizens, competition teams, and food service related businesses and professionals throughout the country. Spearheaded by a team of dedicated people, the MABA's Michael Fay has been BBQ'ing for over 20 years and brings with him over two decades worth of experience as President of the association.

Michael started out on the classic Weber Kettle and currently does the majority of his Q'ing on a tandem Spicewine trailer cooker. He is a certified BBQ judge and event cooker, and is currently the head cook and pitmaster of the Aporkalypse Now BBQ team.
