The BBQ festival, expected to draw as many people as last year, about 30,000 over two days, is in its 15th year. A portion of the proceeds from barbecue sales benefits local charities, including the sponsor, Junior League of Greater Lakeland.

About 150 teams from roughly 20 different states are taking part in the event this year. Half of them are competing in the professional division for a chance at a cash prize and to qualify for larger competitions.

The event is the Florida State Barbecue Championship for teams competing for prize money from the Kansas City Barbecue Society. Carolyn Wells, a representative with the society, said Pigfest is seen as one of the early and more significant competitions in the season.

Today marks the soft-opening of the Burnt Fork BBQ at 614 Church Street, Decatur, GA.

The restaurant takes it’s name from Burnt Fork Creek, which prior to 1960s was dammed up by Mason Mill Park and supplied drinking water to the city of Decatur.

According to the Burnt Fork Creek Watershed Alliance, the dam was destroyed and the reservoir drained in the 1960s.

RIO RANCHO, N.M. (KRQE) - Hopefully, you like eating your barbecue in hot weather because the annual Pork and Brew in Rio Rancho will now be held in July.

City Councilors voted on Wednesday to move the event, which is usually held in late March, to July 4th weekend.

They also approved expanding it from two days to three.

They said combining the Pork and Brew event and Fourth of July celebrations will save money and adding an extra day will bring in more revenue.

In 2010, one day was of the Pork and Brew event was cancelled due to the high winds.

L&L Hawaiian BBQ closed its Carson City restaurant last weekend.

The eatery, 1300 S. Stewart St., was part of the cluster of restaurants on the east side of the Carson Mall, known as The Cove. It opened in 2009.

“They decided in this business climate it wasn't going to work for them,” said Kevin Ray, the mall's property manager. “They just had to make a business decision for themselves.”

The restaurant has three other locations in Reno and Sparks.

Ray said he's already had some interest from other restaurants looking to change locations in Carson City or expand into the capital, including one restaurant from Douglas County.

“I think it's going to be really easy to find a good quality restaurant who can move right in,” Ray said.

In hopes of bringing a Veterans Day Parade to Salinas in November, organizers hope to raise more than $4,000 this Saturday with a BBQ fundraiser.

There are only two days left, and out of the 400 tickets, only 50 remain. Those without tickets, however, are able to purchase food until they run out, officials said.

Spearheaded by members of Salinas’ American Legion Post 31, organizers announced in December they are seeking to bring a traditional Veterans Day Parade to Oldtown on the holiday.

Saturday’s event is located at the Harley Davidson parking lot, 333 N. Main St., and will include a live band, tri-tip and chicken sandwiches, salad, food and drinks.

Tickets are $10.

Mable’s Smokehouse, Greenpoint’s first Southern-style BBQ outpost that opened its doors on January 24th, is just about as pared down as it gets. There are no bells and whistles, no fancy cocktails, no elaborate décor. What they’ve got instead is meat, potatoes, classic sides and a healthy dose of family tradition hailing all the way from Oklahoma.

Mable’s, which is located at 44 Berry Street, in a warehouse that used to be an old tonic water factory, is designed to be a stripped-down BBQ joint featuring southern favorites like pulled pork, brisket and sausages imported all the way from Oklahoma.

“Our heart and soul is in it,” Love said. In addition to the menu, Love and Lutonsky built the entire restaurant from scratch: Lutonsky, in addition to working as an artist, is something of a freelance carpenter at heart. “All the recipes were Grandma Mable’s. The BBQ sauce is very, very top secret, and the pie crust is really special.”

More than 140 barbecue competition teams will flock, or maybe waddle with the occasional snort, their way to Tiger Town starting Friday.

"We've got tons of things this year," said Sherrie Long, a Pigfest board member. "It's going to be one big family party."

This year marks the 15th year of the annual competition, which is sponsored by the Junior League of Greater Lakeland.

A new addition to the festival this year is Legoland's sponsorship of the Kid's Corner, which will have blow-up obstacle courses, a rock climbing wall and Lego building stations.

Need a little help with your grilling when the weather is particularly cold? If you live in a place where the weather is particularly snowy, these tips will help your skills (and grill!) to sizzle.

Winter BBQ Grilling Tips

— Clean snow and ice from the area where you're going to be working.

— In winter, barbecue hoses might shrink and become brittle. "It's important to do more checks for gas leaks with soap and water. Make sure that nothing is cracked and there are no leaks on your connections."

— If possible, situate the grill out of the wind.

— Plan to double the time it usually takes to preheat the grill and increase the cooking time called for in the recipe.

— Choose larger pieces of meat and foods that don't require as much checking.

— Dress warmly. "I always layer myself too," he says. "If you're doing something like steak or chicken that doesn't take much time, then a hat and gloves, maybe a parka or a nice layer of clothing so you don't get cold," he says.

— Have a winter routine of cleanup. "Because it's cold, people might forget to go back and make sure the gas is off, the grill is cleaned, the lid is down and the cover has been replaced. Clean grills and grease trays so critters don't come and feast inside there," Cavallaro says. And if you replace the cover, you won't have to brush off any snow accumulation the next time you want to use the grill.

— Most important: "Make sure you have a full (propane) tank or you're done. You're going to be paying heavy for that pizza or order-in bill."

Dickey's Barbecue Pit, the largest, fastest growing barbecue chain in the country, well-known for their hot, pit-smoked meats, free ice cream, and big yellow cups —has now opened its first Massachusetts location.

The Dickey's franchise location in Massachusetts is owned by Douglas Comolli.

"Barbecue is an underserved niche in Massachusetts, and there is a lot of excitement about bringing Dickey's here," Franchise Owner Douglas Comolli said.

The store is located at 20 Commerce Way in Seekonk.

General Manager LA Fagioli said food has always been her passion and being a part of Dickey's in Seekonk has been a very rewarding experience so far.

"At Dickey's we are passionate about the art of great barbecue," she said. "That is why I am here, to bring something truly unique to this area. And we have been very successful, because our food is delicious. Our ribs are off the hook and our brisket and pulled pork will melt in your mouth."

"We have been told by more than one guest that we are welcomed oasis on the vast desert of Seekonk eateries," she said, laughing.

Dickey's is growing at a rapid pace, now with 139 locations and 60 set to open in 2011 so far.

The company's annual growth rate over the past two years has averaged 35 percent, according to company officials.

Dickey's firmly believes it can set the standard in barbecue by continuing to roll out a national footprint.

The first Dickey's Barbecue opened in 1941 in Dallas, TX.

New Zealanders are willing to take the back seat to their Aussie rivals when it comes to barbecues, red wine, cricket and government initiatives, a survey shows.

The Australian winemakers Taylors Wines commissioned a survey to celebrate Australia Day tomorrow. More than 500 New Zealanders were interviewed on what Australians were better at.

Sixty-nine percent were willing to give bragging rights to Aussies for cooking the best shrimp on the barbie, but 87 percent thought we were better at Anzac biscuits. Eighty-nine percent preferred our meat pies and 91 percent our fish and chips.

Australians were also considered number one for their shiraz, at 78 percent, and cabernet sauvignon, 61 percent, but New Zealanders remained loyal to homemade sauvignon blanc, 78 percent.

WARWICK resident Bryan Lipp is organising a flood-appeal barbecue at Pioneer Park, Swanfels, on Saturday in memory of his late wife Carmel.

Mrs Lipp passed away in 2003 after alifetime of involvement in sport and community activities.

The BBQ starts at noon and is to raise funds to help Lockyer Valley residents who were devastated by this month’s flood.

Mr Lipp said he already had sponsorship from Carey Brothers Meats and was seeking support from many businesses and individuals to help raise money for the flood victims.

“Carmel was always keen on helping the community and I want to remember her as we raise funds for the flood appeal,” Mr Lipp said.

“Salvation Army representatives will be at the BBQ and handle the finances for the day.

“We will have some bush activities.

“I used to work at Gatton and played tennis in the Lockyer Valley and it is impossible to imagine the devastation the floods caused.”

He expects people from as far away as Felton and Pittsworth.

The Mr. BBQ lineup includes the likes of Ben V. “Lance Smellstrong”, Brian Z "The Lint Trap", Stuart R. "Floozy Kazoo", Darrin P. “Chuckle Cheeks” and many others, all of whom will be doing their best to win your vote on the day.

In addition to the California BBQ Association & Kansas City BBQ Society State Championship Competition, there will also be a Rib Eating Contest (admission tickets can be bought on the door or on the phone), as well as a raffle, car show and a Kids Zone to keep the younger ones happy.

The day looks like a great deal of fun!

Vistors of the Orange County festival should be aware that

• Lawn chairs & blankets are welcome.  No outside food or drinks allowed.
• No Pets allowed in campground
• Hand Stamp available for re-entry

With TLC's new season of BBQ Pitmasters just a few weeks away, John Markus, TLC's pitmaster head-honcho, let it slip that there would be a new host in the second series.

Kevin Roberts. who is also known as the "Food Dude", has also been on over 100 national tv shows including  The Today Show, CBS’ Early Show & being a regular on Better T.

The celebrity chef was also a Top Ten Finalist on The Next Food Network Star, and on top of that, he is also the owner and Executive Chef at San Diego’s award-winning East Village Tavern & Bowl, which one of the city’s hottest new downtown urban sports bar.

Kevin was brought up by a single-mother who worked in restaurants in LA, and became involved in the restaurant business in his younger years. With plenty of trial & error and with the help of his mother and grandmother, Kevin taught himself to cook at the age of 8 as an act of “self-preservation.”

His acclaimed cookbook, Munchies, is targeted towards the starving struggling to find quick, simple and tasty alternatives to the campus dining halls and fast foods. With recipes like west coast wings, tater tot hash and cinnamon roasted grapefruit, Roberts’ book expresses the sentiment that there is more to cooking than complex recipes and expensive ingredients.

With Kevin's undeniable knowledge of the restaurant business, as well as being a popular national TV chef, his expertize will come in useful as he hosts the second season of TLC's BBQ pitmasters which will be airing during August.
