At
first glance, homemade barbecue rubs appear to be difficult to make as
well known commercially made rubs usually contain quite a few
ingredients.
Nothing could be further from the truth as creating your
own homemade barbecue rub consists no more than combining a selection
of spices and basic ingredients in the comfort of your kitchen.
You
will not require any special kitchen aids or implements to make it,
just a little time for preparation.
Given that a barbecue rub
consists only simple spices and seasonings, the effect that it has on
the flavor of food is quite remarkable, and in some cases a homemade
barbecue rub should only be used sparingly to get a great result.
Homemade
barbecue rubs can be used on almost anything, though it is common to
find them used more on joints and cuts of beef, lamb and chicken,
rather than fish or vegetables.
This doesn't exclude the use of rubs on
fish or vegetables, you can use your homemade BBQ rubs on anything you
like using the flavors you prefer.
BBQ rubs work best when applied in
advance of cooking. Somewhere between ten minutes and three hours
should be enough for the seasoning to soak in thoroughly.
Rubs fit
perfectly in between marinades, which should be applied about eight
hours in advance, and BBQ sauces, which are generally applied during
cooking.
Unlike
barbecue marinades and sauces, homemade barbecue rubs need only be
applied from 20 minutes to two hours in advance of cooking for the
flavors to infuse.
You can "mount" flavors by using a combination of
BBQ rubs, marinades and sauces to create a fantastic dish, and with
some experimentation you will soon find combinations that suit your
palette and keep you coming back to the grill for more!
Making
your own homemade barbecue rub is really easy, and better yet, it can
take as little as 10 or 15 minutes to prepare.
The difference that a
good rub will make to your food will most likely surprise
your
tastebuds the first time you try it, and leave you wondering why you
haven't used them before.
